Shovel Knight è un classico platform/adventure, arricchito da qualche elemento RPG. La particolarità del gioco sta nel fatto che il protagonista risulta armato di una pala che gli consente di rimuovere detriti e di spostare gli enormi ostacoli incontrati durante il percorso.
